Series: CMS Pedagogies and Innovations in Music

This book will focus on how the Multiple Memory Music Learning framework can help us better understand our brains - and ourselves.

Playing a musical instrument or to perform as a vocalist is unique. It involves numerous simultaneous activities. Musicians must constantly fire off neuronal messages as we plan ahead for what we are about to play. At the same time, we listen to the sounds we are making (and those made by others) and respond accordingly. Perhaps we adjust our intonation. Maybe we lift our dynamic a bit to match our fellow ensemble members. We might also be reading music during this, so we are processing visual information while listening, while also anticipating next finger placements, bowing, breathing… we then deliberately and carefully produce beautiful sounds on our instruments, informed by our relationship to the piece, and our understanding of aesthetics.

The question I’ve always had is… well, how?
